“The Leech” (Dying Battery Pedal) Protoype

The Leech is my first project as 0xd FX! It is a dying battery simulator, inspired by such devices as the Beavis Audio Devolt, and the Dwarfcraft Power Struggle, but with a few major perks.  The first of these is the obvious fact that there is a LED readout of the voltage at the output stage of the pedal, which makes it so much easier to track great settings for pedals. The Leech fits in-between the normal negative tip (Boss, Malekko, Devi Ever. Digitech etc) PSU and the pedal you want to starve, and is foot switchable to allow effect toggling. This can create some crazy sounds, my favorite being an over the top lofi gated type fuzz by limiting a Devi Ever 90 to around 1.6v. The Leech turns a EHX Metal Muff into a harsh gated fuzz machine with no sustain to speak of at around 4v. Some pedals will just cut out as the voltage is decreased, but some sing! Experimentation is the key. The minimum voltage is 1.6v, which truthfully you won’t want to get below anyway.

Heres the artwork that will be on top of the enclosures paint job:

Here is a prototype of The Leech in action:

Things left to do before The Leech is ready:

  • Squeeze it into a tiny enclosure
  • Decide on a colour scheme and paint it up. I have some really cool ideas for this, but you will have to wait and see!
